Good morning to all our readers out there, it’s time to check out the latest sports news today Tuesday January 14, 2020
Starting from the world of Boxing…
Tyson Fury has vowed to knock out Deontay Wilder in the second round when they have their WBC heavyweight championship rematch which has prompted him to employ a new trainer Sugarhill Steward who replaced former trainer Ben Davison. The fight will come up on February 22 as they look to settle from the draw they played against each other last year.
Moving to football now…
It’s no longer news that Barcelona have sacked Ernesto Valverde as their manager and appointed Quique Setien until June 2022. Valverde spent two-and-a-half years and became the first manager Barcelona will sack in mid season since Louis van Gaal was sacked in January 2003.
Valverde managed a total of 145 matches, winning 97, drawing 32 and losing just 16. He won the La Liga twice, one Copa del Rey and one Spanish Super Cup.
Setien meanwhile was a previous manager at Las Palmas and Real Betis. He will take charge immediately and he has also been reported to have a break clause in his contract that could see him leave the club in the summer.
Barcelona wanted to appoint club legend Xavi, but he wanted to join at the end of the season but the Camp Nou side wanted an immediate change, hence opted for Setien.
It’s absolutely ridiculous that it’s through Barcelona that we most times get to know the name of some managers. In recent years, the Spanish giant has appointed series of managers previously not well known by football fans around the world and fingers crossed, Setien will be a man to take the team to another glory.
Barcelona are first on the La Liga table, level on points with Real Madrid but with better goal difference, they are in the last 16 of Champions League and they still have the Copa del Rey to compete in. Setien inherited a good team and there can be no excuse for failure.
Liverpool have rejected Roma’s loan offer to sign midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri as the Serie A side seek for a direct replacement for Nicolo Zaniolo who injured his knee and has been currently ruled out of action until the end of the season.
Manchester United will like to offer Sporting Lisbon £50m plus a £10m add-ons for Bruno Fernandes as against the Portuguese side’s asking price of £64m. Negotiations continue and it might actually be United’s loss more than gain if they miss out on the Portuguese midfielder with injury battling with Paul Pogba and Scott McTominay.
According to reports, Manchester City have given forward Sergio Aguero the leverage to decide how long he wants to stay at the club and also decide when and how he wants to leave.
Roma are still in talks with Inter Milan over the swap deal of Leonardo Spinazzola and Matteo Politano. Politano is an Inter Milan player wanted by Roma while Spinazzola is a Roma player that may switch to Inter.
Celtic star Lewis Morgan has reached an agreement to join MLS club Inter Miami and he has now applied for work permit. Inter Miami will pay £400k for his service.
