Let’s start with the DFB Pokal…
Borussia Dortmund and RB Leipzig have both crashed out of the competition after being beaten in the third-round by Werder Bremen and Eintracht Frankfurt respectively.
It ended 3-2 against Dortmund as Bundesliga relegation threatened Werder Bremen dump them out of the competition. Star player Erling Haaland was his usual self, coming from the bench to score a goal. He now has eight goals in four matches. 17-year old star Gio Reyna also scored a sublime for Dortmund but it was not enough to salvage the game.
RB Leipzig were beaten 3-1 though new signing Dani Olmo who joined in January from Dinamo Zagreb was on target, but it was the second time Frankfurt would beat Leipzig in 11 days.
Moving to Copa del Rey…
Former Tottenham star Roberto Soldado scored a brace to help Granada dump Valencia out of the Copa del Rey and move themselves to the semi-final of the competition. Valencia were the holders, but they’ve now crashed out despite Rodrigo Moreno getting on the scoresheet. The match ended 2-1 and the rest they say is history.
From Ligue 1…
Paris Saint-Germain took their point tally to 58 from 23 matches, moving 15 points ahead at the top of the table after beating Nantes 2-1 away from home. Mauro Icardi scored for the first time in six matches before Thilo Kehrer also scored. Nigerian international Moses Simon scored for Nantes but it was not enough to help salvage any point.
Monaco had Stefan Jovetic to thank as they secure their first Ligue 1 win of the year by beating Angers 1-0. Lille also won over Rennes 1-0 thanks to a lone goal by Loic Remy.
Moving to the FA Cup…
A young Liverpool side with an average age of 19 years and 102 days defeated Shrewsbury 1-0 in the replay of the fourth-round of the competition.
The goal came courtesy of an own goal Ro-Shaun Williams in the 75th minute as the Anfield side moved into the next round in the absence of any first team player except for James Milner who was behind the dug out, the remaining team are on winter break. That was Liverpool’s 40th unbeaten match at Anfield in all competitions. They’ve failed to concede a goal in each of the last seven matches at home, matches they won all. They will now visit Chelsea in the next round.
Newcastle were almost stunned by Oxford United but they secured a 3-2 win after extra time to move into the fifth round of the competition, their first in 14 years. Sean Longstaff and Joelinton took Newcastle 2-0 up before Oxford forced their way back to take the match into extra time. Allan Saint-Maximin however had a superb solo run to give the visitors the winner in the 116th minute.
Wayne Rooney is set for a reunion with Manchester United after helping Derby County to beat Northampton 4-2 by scoring one from the penalty spot. It’s going to be a wonderful one for the former England captain.
