A wonderful morning to all our readers out there as we check out the results of the football matches played yesterday Saturday August 15, 2020
Manchester City crashed out of the Champions League after losing 3-1 to Lyon in Lisbon Portugal last night. City were favourite to triumph the fixture but they simply were not good enough against a Ligue 1 side.
Maxwell Cornet gave Lyon the 24th-minute lead before Kevin De Bruyne equalised in the 69th minute to give the Etihad stadium hopes.
However, substitute Moussa Dembele restored Lyon’s lead in the 79th minute with a controversial goal after he appeared to have fouled defender Aymeric Laporte but after VAR review, the goal was allowed to stand.
In the 85th minute, Pep Guardiola’s side were supposed to be level, but Raheem Sterling missed a glorious chance with an open net and they eventually got punished for that as Dembele scored Lyon’s third a few seconds later as City bow out.
City have now failed to qualify beyond the quarterfinals in the Champions League for the past three seasons. They were simply not good enough this time and the rest they say is history.
This is the first time since 1995/96 season that no team from England and Spain will make it to the Champions League semifinals.
Lyon booked their place in the semi-final of this competition for the first time since 2009/10 as they set up a match against Bayern Munich.
