A wonderful morning to you all as we check out the results of the football matches played yesterday Saturday January 25, 2020
Yesterday birthed a lot of upset results across Europe springing from a Barcelona loss to Valencia, RB Leipzig loss to Eintracht Frankfurt as well as different upsets in the FA Cup.
Let’s go straight to a quick review of the matches…
Barcelona were beaten 2-0 away at Valencia who are yet to lose any match at home in the La Liga so far this season.
Maxi Gomes had his penalty saved by goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen and one of his goal-bound strike tipped to the cross bar by the German international, meaning the margin could have been more than the outcome. Valencia later took the lead thanks to a Jordi Alba’s own goal from a Gomes’ shot before Gomes scored himself 13 minutes from the end of the match.
New Barcelona boss Quique Setien will now know exactly the kind of job he has been appointed to do at the club. Perhaps, it was not only a problem about the manager when Ernesto Valverde was still around, it’s much more about the fact that the Nou Camp side may seem to have lost their identity. They are still first with 43 points, Real Madrid will have a huge change to move ahead of them when they play Real Valladolid today.
In the Bundesliga, RB Leipzig lost to mid-table side Eintracht Frankfurt. The match ended in a 2-0 defeat for the Bundesliga leaders which put an end to their 13-match unbeaten run in all competitions. Goals were scored by Almamy Toure and Filip Kostic.
Leipzig now stand 40 points, one point above second Bayern Munich who thrashed Schalke 5-0 thanks to goals from Thomas Muller, Leon Goretzka, Robert Lewandowski, Serge Gnabry and Thiago Alcantara. It won’t be surprising if Bayern win the Bundesliga title at the end of the season.
Borussia Mönchengladbach however are third with 38 points after beating Mainz 3-1 following two goals from Alassane Plea and another from Florian Neuhaus. Robin Quaison’s goal for Mainz opened the scores but it was cancelled out by the three goals from Mönchengladbach.
Moving to the FA Cup…
There were major upset as usual, the basic tradition of the FA Cup is seen in the upset of lower league teams beating a team in the Premier League or when a lower Premier League team beats a higher Premier League team.
Let’s see how it all went…
Championship side West Brom stunned West Ham at the Olympic stadium thanks to a 1-0 victory despite defender Semi Ajayi receiving his march order midway through second-half of the match. Slaven Bilic who was a former Hammer manager came back to hunt his former club thanks to a lone goal from Conor Townsend that sends West Ham out of the competition.
Southampton held Tottenham to a 1-1 draw at home thanks to a late goal from Sofiane Boufal that cancelled out Heung-Min Son’s early second-half goal. Both sides will now have to play a replay when they are supposed to be having their winter Premier League break.
Norwich defeated Burnley 2-1 thanks to goals from Grant Hanley and Josip Drmic which was scored in the second-half. Eric Pieters scored for Burnley in the 72nd minute but it was not enough to give them a stay in the competition.
Chelsea progressed into the next round as late goal from Kamil Grosicki could not stop the Blues from triumphing 2-1 over Hull City. Michy Batshuayi and Fikayo Tomori scored for Frank Lampard’s side to secure a 2-1 victory.
Leicester City progressed into the next round of the competition thanks to a 1-0 win over Brentford. The lone goal was scored by Kelechi Iheanacho who now has 10 goals involvement in all competitions so far this season with seven goals and three assists.
Sheffield United defeated Millwall 2-0 away from home thanks to goals from Mo Basic and Ollie Norwood.
