The Champions League started yesterday and there were lots of exciting results on the night…
Holders Liverpool were well beaten 2-0 by Napoli at Naples in Italy thanks to two late goals, first; a controversial penalty converted by Dries Mertens and thereafter, former Tottenham star Fernando Llorente also scored.
It was a bad day in office for Liverpool and they have now lost their opening match of the Champions League game of a new campaign for only the second time ever; the first time was against Valencia in September 2002 where they lost 2-0.
Napoli have now won five of their six home Champions League matches against opponents from the Premier League.
Fernando Llorente has now scored for four different clubs in the Champions League, becoming the joint most by a Spaniard alongside Fernando Morientes. Llorente has now scored for Napoli, Juventus, Sevilla and Tottenham.
Valencia stunned Chelsea at the Stamford Bridge with a 1-0 victory thanks to the lone goal from Rodrigo as Ross Barkley missed the chance to win a point for the Blues by converting from the spot but he failed in the hijacked attempt of taking responsibility into his own hands.
Frank Lampard became the first Chelsea boss to lose his first Champions League game since Gianluca Vialli who drew against Milan in 1999.
The match was Chelsea’s second defeat at Stamford Bridge in their last 42 Champions League group stage matches at the stadium.
Valencia have now won two Champions League matches away at Premier League sides with the last time being against Liverpool in 2002.
Chelsea youngster Mason Mount limped off during the game following an ugly challenge by former Arsenal star Francis Coquelin which resulted in an ankle injury. The period of time he would be out is however not yet known.
